Car Salesmen - Understanding

Hidden Truth or the Open Lie
You decide.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4650024.stm

I’ve played the game before. Openly and fearlessly make a statement that cannot be deciphered as whether it is true or false.
Is this one true or false?
“He stressed that this was a commercial venture and not philanthropy.”
Do you ever feel like Bono, as if you are trying to help others but help yourself first?
I do.
This is only a round trip ticket to ILOVEMYSELF land.
I admire the boldness of the statements.
Perhaps U2 can relate.

u got it ...
what a joke ...like, this will really make a different for AIDS sufferers in Africa ...? Bono is a bone-head if he thinks that ... what those people need are drugs (i.e. anti-AIDS drugs) not our pity ... or us trying to make a $ off of their misfortune ...

p.s. this is graffittiartist - just changed my 'name' ...

I'm not sure.

There is truth in the fact that big money is made by hard-commerce. Now, if I buy, for example, a pair of glasses for a 100 bucks and I can choose A) all of it goes through the regular channels or B) 20 dollars (they promise an average of 40) go into a fund that actually helps buying medicine and so on... well, I find B) quite okay.

I concede that some of that money might go into the wrong hands. I also agree that Bono and his buddies are making quite a PR-move. They might even put higher price-tags on the products. And finally, Nymph, I think that you are very right when you say that they are making big bucks from misfortune.

But the other side of the coin is: If this move makes people CHOOSE that "RED"-brand, it COULD gather good money for a good cause.

So what do I prefer? 20 dollars that go - without doubt - directly into some corporate cash drawer? Or 20 bucks that might, just MIGHT end up helping someone - while I get some good merchandise?

A second thought. One could say: "Why don't you donate those 20 bucks directly to a help organization or whatever?" That's right. And that is just it! I do donate, but not very often.

So, I am the typical member of the target group. I DO have Armani-glasses. With a very broad range of attractive products I WILL therefore donate MORE without even the bother of having to THINK about it and even feel good about it.

Baseline: Bono might make more bucks. Amex, GAP, Converse make money, too. But ... so does "Africa".

I relate to him (Bono), because he is trying to say that it has to make money for them first. That's honest. The other side of the deal is the people that need help get some at least. Ben is right about the chances of people getting help, I am just a paranoid freak when it comes to putting money in someone's hand without a full report of accountabilty.
And I must add that I am a bloody fan since Bloddy Sunday.
